My pick this week is a nice list of talks called The Mapping Series: In Conjunction With Singapore Biennale 2013. These are lectures and artist talks “engaging elements of social sciences, cultural anthropology and arts and design, …encourages a multi-layered and multi-disciplinary exploration of some of the salient themes and issues reflected in the Biennale.”
These sessions are happening on selected Saturdays starting 23rd November 2013 till 15th February 2014, 2pm – 4.30pm, at either singapore art museum or National Library Building. Admission is free and registration is required.
Each session consists of two parts that discuss different topics, except the one to be held on 18th January 2014, which will be a dialogue between artist Liao Jiekai and historian Dr Hong Lysa, with reference to Liao’s Biennale work, Bukit Orang Salah (singapore art museum at 8Q, go up to level 4, turn toward the gallery on your right and walk to the end of the corridor).
The first presentation of the inaugural session will be Dr Lai Chee Kien’s introduction of his Biennale work, National Theatre @50 (Fort Canning Park/Tank Road), and his architectural practice. With that, here is something to ponder on: how are memories and identities tied to buildings and places?
Second part of the session will be on Contestations of Memory in Southeast Asia by Dr Roxana Waterson and Dr Kwok Kian Woon, who will explore personal and collective memories in Southeast Asia and how they can be influenced, suppressed or manifested by surrounding factors, and what are the possible consequences.
On a lighter side with regards to memories, Angie Seah’s Biennale work – Conducting Memories (singapore art museum, level 2, facing spiral staircase) – is a fun way to recall and reminisce sounds familiar to Singapore. No matter your age, there got to be some sounds that would bring out the sentimental you. Seah will share with you about her work and her practice during the session to be held on 15th February 2014.
